Sales Prospecting and business development are possibly the most crucial elements in your selling success formula. Most salespeople realize this. However, most salespeople do not enjoy prospecting and try to minimize the time spent in this area.

As you will see, if you are not successful at prospecting, it's unlikely you'll be a successful salesperson, but if you are, you will undoubtedly be successful in one of the most challenging and rewarding careers has to offer.

Sales Prospecting, on the other hand, is clearly a prerequisite to the remainder of the selling cycle. If you are not effective at prospecting and business development, you will never have the opportunities to be effective at any remaining element in the sales process. You will never be able to meet prospects, recommend appropriate solutions for their needs, close sales, and provide exceptional post sale customer service.

Given this fact, you could easily conclude that if you are not effective at prospecting, you will not be effective at selling. While the same could be said of any remaining step in the sales cycle, you will clearly reach a premature dead end due to a lack of effectiveness in the prospecting area.

In spite of what the social selling and inbound marketing companies tell us, the truth is that top producers and sales superstars are great prospectors who take personal responsibility for identifying and creating their own sales opportunities.

When a company's sales organization is failing to make its number or reach its potential, it is not because its salespeople can't present well, are ineffective closers, or lack the skills for offering insight or challenging prospects. It's rarely because of a deficit of talent. The reason most sales organizations are not making their numbers is that the pipeline is weak because the sales team is not prospecting.

Top salespeople view prospecting as a way of life. They prospect with single- minded focus, worrying little about what other people think of them. They enthusiastically dive into social media prospecting, telephone prospecting, e-mail prospecting, cold calling, networking, asking for referrals, knocking on doors, following up on leads, attending trade shows, and striking up conversations with strangers.

Top salespeople are relentless, unstoppable prospectors. They are obsessive about keeping their pipeline full of qualified prospects. They prospect anywhere and anytime—constantly turning over rocks looking for their next opportunity. They prospect day and night—unstoppable and always on.

Top Salespeople are aware that failure in sales is not caused by a deficit of talent, skills, or training. Not a poor territory or inferior product. Not subpar communication and presentation skills. Not a failure to ask for the business and close. Not terrible sales managers. The brutal fact is the number one reason for failure in sales is an empty pipe, and the root cause of an empty pipeline is the failure to prospect.
